Photo: The first SDplanNet-AP annual conference held at Conrad hotel Bangkok, Thailand during 18-20 September 2009. The conference has been well-received with constructive discussions from practitioners and policy-makers in the region from 50 on-site participants together with around 80 visitors from live web casting.
The first SDplanNet-AP annual conference has been a platform to exchange views and ideas among network members and sustainable development practitioners in Asia-Pacific and with similar networks in other regions. As a result, network members were able to take stock of sound policy and planning recommendations on the thematic areas listed below, and consider implementation in their home country.
The conference focused on three main themes including:
- Theme 1: Integration of Climate Change into National Planning of Countries in Asia-Pacific;
- Theme 2: Sustainability, Economic Stimulus Packages, and Green Growth of Countries in Asia-Pacific; and
- Theme 3: Strategic Policy Assessment Tools in National Planning and Policymaking of Countries in Asia-Pacific.

Panel discussion: What are some of the main barriers to the use of strategic assessment approaches in Asia and the Pacific and how might these barriers be overcome? This panel will focus on the use of strategic assessment approaches to national planning and policymaking of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The Panel will examine how such tools could lead to a green economy, and also enhance climate change alleviation or adaptation. The Panel will examine experiences in specific countries, and will focus on the following questions: 1) why have Asia-Pacific countries not used strategic assessment approaches as much as developed countries?; 2) what examples are there of SAA currently being used in the region?; 3) how could the benefits of SAA be best shown to decision-makers?; 4) what are the best “entry points” for use of SAA in developing countries?
